Certification Questions

Hi,

I have my masters in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and taught for three years at a middle school the New York City public school system. I have a couple of questions:

1. My New York State teaching certificate expired last year. Is having been a certified teacher with 3 years of experience going to be sufficient for most schools, or is the fact that my certificate is expired likely to severely hinder my opportunities?

2. If I decide to apply for jobs that just require the TEFLcertification will schools recognize my masters in lieu of the typical 100 hour course? Should I worry about schools who are used to applicants with the TEFL certificate not recognizing a my masters in TESOL?

    Hello Nathaniel:

    Welcome to the forum! You will need to have an active teaching certificate to qualify for certified teaching positions, I recommend you to renew yours. As for your years of teaching experience, yes, they will still be counted towards your years of experience.

    TESOL like TEFL is an ESL certification if schools are asking for a TEFL certificate, in most, if not all cases a TESOL is also accepted
