What is the likelihood of my getting a position?

Hi,

My name is Dana and I am currently working as a Project Manager. $1300 is a lot of money and I want to make sure that a TEFL certification is a worthwhile investment. I would be a first time ESL teacher (I am a university graduate), and I wanted to know, before I spent the money, what is the likelihood of a new ESL teacher with no teaching license, getting hired to teach ESL abroad? I'm not particularly picky where I teach, as long as my son is welcome, but I don't want to spend all this money and have no job to show for it.

    Hi Dana.

    I am just going to send you a quick reply here (my first ever) with my opinion. Others will, no doubt, also be able to offer their opinions and write about their experiences. I have taught both in Japan and Saudi Arabia (both with no teaching license). For both jobs, I needed a Bachelor Degree. Now, I understand about the $1,300 fee. I my opinion, it is well worth it (think long term) as it would give you an advantage in many overseas ESL/EFL jobs, especially compared to those without it. My last bit of advice would be sure it is (at least) a 120-hour course and I believe that an in-person course is more favorable to employers than an on-line one. Also, it seems like the price is about average. Now, depending on where you live, maybe there are cheaper schools out there, or maybe discounts available for early registration, registering with a friend, etc.

    Oh, and once you start teaching overseas, and you look back years later at your experience(s), I can guarantee that you will never forget it or regret it.

    Look around, there are tons of overseas ESL/EFL teaching jobs available.

    I am P.HD Scholar at The Islamia University of the Bahawalpur (Pakistan). I am also doing job as a visiting Lecturer in different departments and taught different subjects at BS Level, Master Level & M.Phil Level.
