I'm doing my BA in Economics right now at SFU and instead of just traveling, I want to teach English in China (preferably Shanghai or Beijing). Do I need a TEFL certificate to apply for these jobs? Please any advice would help a lot.
Hi Alison and Danny, A TEFL Certificate is often required for ESL positions and is definitely an asset. Not only does it prepare you for teaching non native English speakers but it also makes you a more appealing candidate for better paying jobs at reputable schools. We recommend the University of Toronto's TEFL Certification - it's a self paced, online course that's internationally recognized by employers, giving you the best chance of landing an amazing teach abroad job :)
Hi I want to work in China with my 2 dependants. I dont have a TEFL but I graduated from education in modern languages at the university . I've been teaching ESL since 2007 but I'm not a native speaker. But my english level is advance.
Do I have any chance?
Hi Xionary, welcome to the Teach Away Community. If you have native level proficiency of English, then we encourage you to apply to positions of interest -- especially if you already have relevant teaching experience. Typically, you'll find more information about dependent benefits under each individual posting. We encourage you to apply anyway, even if that info isn't listed under the posting -- our placement coordinators would be more than happy to answer your questions if you are contacted for an interview.
Cheers Janice
Good day! I also want to teach in China and Japan. I am a licensed teacher and I have an experience teaching Chinese online in an ESL school for few months. With regards to getting a better opportunity for a high paying school, I am interested to enroll here in Teach Away (specifically the 150-hour program). I'm just so curious aboutthe procedure in claiming my certificate and how long will it take for me to wait to get hired in teaching abroad. Thank you!
Hi Janeliza;
Apologies if we missed responding to your post here! Just to give you a general idea, your certificate from TEFL online will be sent to you via mail and email. For all other information please do contact teflonline@teachaway.com and let them know all your questions

Hi, I really want to teach in China/Japan and start my new career as an International teacher. I am non native speaker from Nepal but all my academics were in English language. Further, I also have TESOL certificate and teaching experience before I had TESOL certificate. But still there is lot of discrimination between natives and non natives. Can I still find a teaching job?
Hello Ashok;
Welcome to the forum! we have teachers from all over world, and I would recommend you to keep an open mind apply to the positions that you are interested in. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure that you qualify for a working visa in the countries that you are interested in and with that you should be able to apply to the positions with confidence
Good luck with your applications Best, Shirin
Hi there this is Georgios from Greece currently living in UK. I am in the process of acquiring a TEFL qualification . I see that in our profile has a section about certification and it gives three choices ESL Certification, Teacher Qualification and Administrator Qualification. By the time that I acquire the TEFL which of the three options provided are appropriate for me to choose?
Hello Georgios:
Welcome to the forum! upon completion of your TEFL certification, you are considered an ESL instructor
Hope this helps Shirin
Hi there, TEACHAWAY asked me to send them a Health Disclosure form. I do not see this on the site? How can I access this? Kind Regards
