How safe is it to teach so far away from the West Indies?

I have just recently heard about teaching in the far east. As a christian, can I keep my sanity? I am always desirious of teaching in a foreign country but I think to go this far is a risk? Please tell me something that will help me to come along with my eleven year old son. At first I think I should work for a year then take him. Is there anything to fear?

    Hi Constance!
    Yes, you can keep your sanity as a Christian in the far east (and Middle East as well), as I have as a Catholic in Buddhist Myanmar and in Muslim Oman. Just the usual heads-up: respect to religious sites, descent clothing and public behavior, and avoiding taboo topics in conversations. I was scared at the idea of being in a Muslim country with all that's in the news, but was surprised to know that most of my students and Muslim co-workers who faithfully follow the Qur'an are peace-loving and generous. I was also a bit hesitant to venture into a "newly-opened" Myanmar, which is the most devout Buddhist country I know, but everyone there puts teachers on a pedestal ;-) As for bringing your son, my friends usually have their kids over after a year or so for schooling, and they seem to get along okay.
