Hello everyone! i've never worked abroad and i'm just wondering and scared to be honest, Maybe because i'm still young taking into concideration my age which is 21 years old. Is it safety to work abroad?
I am answering this over a year after you posted, but I'd still like to answer you in case anyone else reads this thread.
I lived overseas, teaching in South Korea. I'm a bit of a homebody so making that leap from what was familiar was HARD and I was 30 years old at that point. I spent about 2.5 years teaching in Korea before I came home.
Overall it was a positive experience. There's nothing quite like it and you'll find so many people living vicariously through you as you share your journey.
I had an English degree and teaching degree under my belt, as well as a decade of experience working with very young children. I was a desirable candidate. You may want to consider doing your TEFL to boost your chances.
Your experience abroad is what you make it but definitely go in with a goal in mind. I wanted both to savings and to experience life in another country. Some places will only allow you to break even - it's more about the experience. I met a lot of expats where I was and Korea has a lot of places you can shop or go if you're feeling a bit homesick. We're lucky to live in a day and age of internet, where everyone is just a Skype call away. Also, tons of forums to help you get information and resources as well. And if things get really uncomfortable for you, there's no shame in going home.
If you're doing university/college right now, wait till you're done you're degree and then proceed with applying. You'll find you're a different person at 25 than you were at 21 (and the same will hold true as you get older). It's great to get the opportunity when you're younger especially. I have no SO, no car - nothing to tie me down. Makes things easier for sure.
As far as safety, do your research. For Canada, there is a specific travel page which lists a slew of countries and advisories for each of them. But sometimes it helps to talk to expats living in those countries. Back in late 2012, early 2013, everyone in NA was concerned about North Korea but none of the Koreans around me seemed phased. Turned out it was posturing because SK recently elected a new president. The expat community was overall fine - only a couple newbies jumped ship while this was going on. Our families back home were more concerned than we were.
I hope this helps you somewhat. If you have more questions, I'll try my best to answer them. Cheers!
