what does it mean a dependent?

I don't understand what does the word dependent mean in this context.

    A person who relies on another, especially a family member, for financial support

    Thanks Kjerstin. Just to specify for our case, it refers to a child or spouse who you are planning to bring with you to teach overseas. (Ie: even if you live with your parents, they would not qualify as a dependent due to visa sponsorship restrictions.)
