NZ Teacher looking at teaching abroad

Greetings,

I am a 39 year old NZ teacher with 12 years experience and a Bachelor of Education. I've taught a variety of subjects to a variety of levels, mainly Year 7-12.(ESL isn't one of them though)

I'm looking at teaching abroad next year perhaps in Asia or Arabia.

Although I won't be looking at taking my wife and daughter with me (at least at first) because I do have a family I need any options I'll consider to be financially viable.

I'm willing and able to do a TEFL course - if it raises my job prospects and/or earnability. Is a TEFLcourse worthwhile for me?  I'm sure it will teach me some good skills and look good on my CV but I don't want to commit to time, effort and cost if its not significantly worthwhile...

Any info and advice would be much appreciated!

    Hi Brent,

    Welcome to the Teach Away Community! As you are a certified teacher, you do not have to limit yourself to just ESL jobs and therefore don't necessarily need a TEFL certificate. The best way to find a position you could qualify for would be to head to our job board by clicking the green "Find Teaching Jobs" button on the top right > "see more options" and filter by subject. You would have a greater chance of finding a position with a subject that you already have teaching experience in.

    If you do go for the ESL route, a TEFL certificate could definitely benefit, but is not 100% required. Please check the individual job postings to see if a certified is required for that particular position.
